A special event marked the beginning of construction of the new high pressure natural gas pipeline to Western Macedonia, held on Thursday 23 of February in Kozani, Greece.

The 160-kilometer pipeline will provide natural gas to both industrial and domestic users enabling large parts of Central and Western Macedonia regions to benefit from the clean energy era.

The West Macedonia pipeline will also be one of the first transmission pipelines in Europe, and the first in Greece, certified to transport up to 100% hydrogen. This project will form part of the European Hydrogen Backbone, which is an example of the  new energy transition infrastructure needed to achieve climate targets and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Maria Rita Galli, CEO of DESFA, stated: "West Macedonia pipeline, is a project that opens new development prospects for both the regions of Central and West Macedonia, ensuring their smooth transition into a cleaner energy era, while providing access to natural gas to numerous new areas and users in the wider region. DESFA, not only further strengthens the energy interconnection of these regions but starting from West Macedonia also creates an energy infrastructure ready to play a central role to the country’s future energy system, with multiple benefits for the area. More particularly, the new pipeline enables the production of green gases such as biomethane and hydrogen, creating new investment and job opportunities in the region, while further diversifying and strengthening the security of supply of Greece with sustainable energy.”

Ilias Bekiros, General Manager of Corinth Pipeworks commented “We are proud to contribute with our innovative technical progress on hydrogen to the establishment of DESFA’s hydrogen network towards the green transition of Greece. We have built a long and trusted cooperation along with DESFA with a common goal to achieve the necessary level of reliability, in order for the Greek gas network to be certified for the use of hydrogen. West Macedonia pipeline will be ready when the production and use of hydrogen will start, and excess hydrogen (H2) produced by renewable energy sources will be injected into the gas network.”
